Canada BC ice wines served overlooking Lake Okanagan

#1. Canada is not one of the world’s top wine producers, but it is especially known internationally for which wine style?

Icewine
Canada’s signature wine claim is icewine, made from grapes naturally frozen on the vine and pressed while still frozen. Ontario is especially important to Canada’s icewine reputation. It is basically a dessert wine with frostbite and excellent branding.

#2. France may be wine royalty, but if you had to guess the country’s leading wine color by national consumption, what would you pick?

Red Wine
Still held the largest single share in France in OIV’s 2021 color breakdown, at 39% of national wine consumption, but it has taken a serious tumble from 52% in 2000. Rosé is no wallflower either, reaching 33%. France still loves red wine, but red no longer gets to act like it owns the table.

#3. Italy makes plenty of legendary reds, but which wine color leads Italian consumption?

White Wine
In 2021, Italy consumed about 14.2 million hectolitres of white wine, compared with 9 million hectolitres of red and 1 million hectolitres of rosé. So yes, the land of Chianti and Barolo quietly reaches for white more often. Plot twist, but make it chilled.

Spain red wine at Spanish Vineyard

#4. Spain produces world-famous reds, whites and sparkling Cava. But which wine color leads Spanish consumption?

Red Wine
In Spain, red wine accounted for 54% of consumption in 2021, up from 49% in 2000. White held around 40%, while rosé slipped to 6%. Spain looked at the global white-wine trend and politely kept pouring red.

#5. Australia is known for bold Shiraz, but which wine style has helped push the global rise of white wine?

Chardonnay
OIV’s color report notes that white wine has grown globally, partly driven by increased supply and demand from countries including the United States, Australia and South Africa. Australia’s Chardonnay boom helped white wine stop acting like red wine’s polite sidekick.

#6. The UK is a major wine market, but which color leads the British glass?

White Wine
OIV’s 2021 UK breakdown shows red wine at 40% and rosé at 12%, leaving white wine with the largest share at roughly 48%. Red has slipped from 48% in 2000, while rosé has climbed. Britain: still orderly, but now slightly more chilled.

Germany Vineyards on hills in Rhine Gorge river Rhine Valley

#7. Germany produces plenty of white wine, especially Riesling. But among German wine drinkers, which color had the largest share in 2021?

Red Wine
Germany’s wine production leans white, but OIV’s 2021 consumption breakdown shows red wine still ahead at 48%, though down from 56% in 2000. White and rosé gained ground. Germany, apparently, enjoys keeping its wine identity just awkward enough for a quiz question.

#8. Portugal is famous for Port, Vinho Verde and sturdy reds, but which wine color best matches the country’s broader production identity?

Red Production
Portugal’s wine sector is strongly tilted toward red and rosé production, with the USDA reporting that about three-quarters of Portugal’s wine production consists of red and rosé wines. So yes, Port gets the fame, Vinho Verde gets the patio crowd, but red still has serious main-character energy.

#9. Argentina is famous for Malbec, but does the data back up the red-wine reputation?

Red Wine
Argentina is a red-wine stronghold. OIV reports that red wine was close to 70% of national wine consumption in 2021, while white dropped to 26% and rosé stayed around 4%. Malbec did not come here to be a supporting actor.

#10. In OIV’s latest country-level wine-by-color breakdown, which style led US wine consumption?

White Wine
In OIV’s latest country-level wine-by-color breakdown, based on 2021 data, white wine led US consumption at 18.3 million hectolitres, ahead of red at 11.5 million and rosé at 3.2 million. The US was also the world’s top wine consumer that year. America looked at red wine and said, “Nice, but do you come cold?”
